Assassin's Creed Japan in 2024, Xbox Signs to Keep Call of Duty on PlayStation, Last of Us 2 Update

Posting suggests Assassin's Creed Code Red may be coming in 2024, Xbox-Activision deal nears closer with PlayStation agreement, and Last of Us 2 may be getting an update.

We’re back with another week of the latest, biggest video game news.

  • Assassin’s Creed Japan (officially announced as “Codename Red” last year) may be releasing as a “biggest blockbuster” of 2024. A post on LinkedIn from a Ubisoft business development employee said “We are seeking [a sponsor] partner for this title Assassin's Creed Codename RED for next year.”

  • PlayStation has signed a binding agreement with Xbox that states Call of Duty will remain on the platform for the next 10 years. Based on previous agreements, it’s assumed that will include past and future franchise releases. Xbox has another deadline to close their purchase of Activision-Blizzard by July 18th. Although the FTC and CMA have tried to stop or alter it, Xbox has so far prevailed.

  • The composer for Last of Us, Gustavo Santaolalla, let slip in an interview with Blender that Last of Us Part 2 is getting some kind of "new editions" of the game, according to IGN and spotted by VGC and others. “In the new editions you can make me play certain themes and well, I can't tell you anything else,” he said.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog might be getting some reboots. It’s a small tidbit, but in an interview with Famitsu (spotted by DualShockers) Sega’s president, Yukio Sugino, was talking about Sonic Superstars (Fall 2023) and said it “has a reboot aspect” even though it’s a new game, a return to 2D. He further said “Sonic is Sega’s flagship IP, and we are considering reboots and remakes for it in parallel with new titles” (according to a VGC translation).

  • Diablo 4 on Game Pass? In a since-deleted post by Game Pass Tracker on Twitter, the president of Blizzard responded saying “This is not happening,” referring to Diablo 4 not coming to Xbox’s Game Pass currently. I might add — while this isn’t happening, of course it always could happen, especially with Microsoft’s potential purchase of Blizzard.
