MGS3 Remake, New Bungie Game, Spider-Man 2 Amazes…and So…Much….More...

Snake Eater remake is real, Bungie finally reveals new game, Marathon, and Spider-Man 2 flexes at Sony’s showcase.

The rundown (and all the trailers) of the Biggest Game News for the week ending May 25, 2023:

  • Metal Gear Solid Δ (Delta) announced — a full-fledged remake of Snake Eater. Release date unknown.

  • Marathon is a new PVP extraction shooter from Bungie, famed Halo- and Destiny-developer…coming at a later date.

  • Spider-Man 2: massive 10-minute-plus PS5 gameplay demo (to no one’s surprise) shows incredible potential. Along with a few big reveals: Kraven the Hunter joins the cast and Parker dons the Black Suit (Venom powers).

  • PlayStation 5 is getting a handheld accessoryProject Q is a controller-and-screen (8-inch) device for streaming your installed games over WiFi…likely just at your home.

  • Alan Wake 2 gameplay is simply stunning. A new trailer announced the release date: October 17th.

  • “Fairgame$” from famed Assassin’s Creed producer’s studio, Haven. New PS5-exclusive IP is a “competitive heist game” from Jade Raymond’s studio, which was purchased by Sony earlier in 2023.

  • “Concord” by ex-Destiny developers is a PVP first-person shooter for PS5/PC, out in 2024. The teaser revealed little — but Firewalk, the studio, says “every match is an opportunity for a new story.”

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 was finally fully unveiled by Capcom. Beloved action-RPG from 2012 is getting a sequel. Release date is TBA — but the trailer featured tons of spellbinding gameplay, which I think suggests it could land within the next year.

  • Phantom Blade 0, bloody-fast “kung-fu-punk” action-RPG, draws eyes from Sekiro, Nioh and Souls-like fans. The Unreal Engine 5-powered gameplay was slick as hell. It’s coming to PS5 as well as PC.

Marathon Teaser (Bungie’s Extraction Shooter)

Stunning visual style from the studio that make wielding guns magic in games? I’m in. Expect ounces of Halo, Destiny mixed with parts of Escape from Tarkov and Division Dark Zone extractions. It’s pure speculation, though. But one thing is sure: Bungie’s only standard is releasing genre-defining experiences.

Metal Gear Solid Delta Reveal

Not much is known, but Delta is a full remake being done by Konami internal teams along with Virtuos Games studios, which is known for helping on projects including The Outer Worlds, Jedi: Fallen Order, Dark Souls Remastered, Horizon Zero Dawn and more.

Spider-Man 2 Gameplay

Insomniac is creating a game true with all of Sony’s values: AAA, Hollywood appeal, and industry-leading storytelling. This gameplay reveal trailer doesn’t mess around. There’s a lot to unpack, but the need-to-know is this:

  • Play as both Miles and Peter in intersecting, real-time gameplay. Maybe more. (Check the unique HUDs for a sample of how deep this likely is.)

  • Both Peter and Miles have unique, all-new skill trees. The heroes also include a shared skill tree that offers parallel upgrades for both.

  • We get to use sweet Venom moves with the Black Suit.

  • Soar with a wing suit…like a Spidey squirrel.

  • New City Boroughs added.

  • Kraven the Hunter is a new villain.

Spider-Man was an incredible technical and gameplay achievement, and Miles upped the quality. For me, the best parts of these modern AAA games are when you mix fierce, skill-tree based combat with real-time (no loading) cut-scenes and bombastic stage change-ups. Spider-Man had all of that. So I hope the sequel’s main, gold path focuses on that and doesn’t drag me into too bloated of a “hang out and explore and wait” before the next good stuff. I’ll explore if I want to, but I’d rather have a shorter core experience that doesn’t miss with the pace.

Alan Wake 2: Eye-Popping Gameplay Trailer

This was the best trailer of the PlayStation Showcase that included real gameplay (putting aside Marathon, which was just pure, artistic magic). Killer pacing, unbelievable visuals and the gameplay looks white-knuckle good.

Not much is known, but several key members come directly from working on Destiny for Bungie. It’s a PvP multiplayer first-person shooter.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Capcom’s Action-RPG Returns

Dragon's Dogma is a single player, narrative driven action-RPG that challenges players to choose their own experience – from the appearance of their Arisen, their vocation, their party, how to approach different situations and more.

On your journey, you’ll be joined by Pawns, mysterious otherworldly beings, in an adventure so unique you will feel as if accompanied by other players while on your own adventure.

All of these elements are elevated further by the latest in graphics, artificial intelligence (AI) and physics technology to create a truly immersive fantasy world in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Phantom Blade 0: Unreal Engine 5 Blade Chaos

Phantom Blade Zero unfolds in a semi-open world. We are aware that “open world” is the buzz word in these days, but with limited resources, we would rather present you multiple maps of reasonable size, and handcrafted and populated with diverse activities, instead of one huge continuity full of repurposed/reused assets.

One More Thing… Neva (by Those Gris Developers)

Alright, you could be a rare few that read/watched this far. As a quick bonus, I have to mention Neva by Nomada Studio.

They created Gris. If you never played it — go do it. Do it on Switch, or do it on Xbox or PS5 at 120fps. It’s a visually striking, experiential platformer, adventure that sets your emotions ablaze with gorgeous art and a powerful soundtrack.

To that end, I expect Neva to be pretty grand.

Here’s a look at Gris if you want to check it out.
