PlayStation Portal Portable... If You Stay Inside - Biggest Gaming News

Sony's PS Portal at-home handheld will be $199, Destiny 2: The Final Shape release date, and a whole lot more from Gamescom 2023 week.

Y’all, there was way too much news in the past week. Gamescom 2023 rolled like a grenade, clearing the field for an absolutely massive end-of-the-year for gamers lies ahead.

  • Sony’s PlayStation Portal (acronym would still be PSP, ahem!) “remote PS5 player” got a fleshed out reveal. Previously called Project Q, it described the at-home-only device as being for gamers that “might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house.” Honestly? If I had the money I’d buy it for the bathroom, at a minimum.

    • $199.99 USD price point.

    • You’ll need WiFi speeds of 5-15Mbps in your home.

    • 8” 1080p60 LCD screen.

    • Battery life is not being discussed yet.

    • Launches “later this year.”

    • Opinion: This feels like stopgap towards the next fully-portable PlayStation handheld and, let’s face it, Nintendo Switch competitor. It’s likely Sony is focused on PS5 sales above all, but likely wants to get its cloud strategy in place — alongside truly compelling tech advancements — at a price consumers can swallow for a lesser handheld. Nintendo has shown 720p gaming is fine enough for the 100 million gamers that bought a Switch…

  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be the first and last big expansion for the franchise before they move on to a sequel in Cyberpunk 2. In its interview with IGN the game’s director, Gabriel Amatangelo, confirmed this and more.

    • CD Projekt Red also unveiled all the “new ways to play” with it’s Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay 2.0 patch that’s coming to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC for free. There’s brand-new and redesigned skill trees, new enemy AI improvements, police behavior is upgraded and a bunch more. Of course, all of that will effect your Phantom Liberty journey as well.

  • While Baldur’s Gate 3 will hit PlayStation 5 on September 6th, 2023 it has finally been confirmed it will come to Xbox “this year,” after technical details held the release back. As one concession to make sure this happens, BG3 won’t support split-screen co-op play on Xbox Series S.

  • Destiny 2: The Final Shape was more fully revealed in Bungie’s annual showcase. It releases February 27, 2023 as the conclusion to the FPS-meets-MMO’s light and darkness saga story. With it, Bungie also announced the four-season model is no more; instead, Destiny 2 will start featuring a new episodic model with three per year starting in 2024. Bungie roundaboutly hinted that 2025 may not get a massive new expansion and lean more into the three-episode model, which is here to stay, but did not fully confirm its vision.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer open beta hits as follows (start times begin at 10AM PT for all):

    • Weekend One (PlayStation): Oct 6-7th, early access. Oct. 8-10th, open beta.

    • Weekend Two (Xbox/PC/PlayStation: Oct 12-13th, early access. Oct 14-16th, open beta on all platforms.

  • Remnant 2 took the throne for July 2023’s best-selling games (U.S.) according to Matt Piscatella of the NPD group. It took the number-one spot followed by: Diablo 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and Final Fantasy 16.

  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases October 20th …and will be the first major Mario game without the original, iconic voice actor Charles Martinet’s talents. We don’t know who the new voice actor is yet. Nintendo confirmed Martinet will move into a new “Mario Ambassador” role, and will continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario.

  • Diablo 4 announced Season 2, Season of the Blood, will be coming out October 17th, 2023. They not only unveiled the season’s theme of “vampiric powers,” but surprised players with promises of much-demanded quality of life improvements.

    • Gems will no longer take up inventory space.

    • Ability to search and filter stash inventory.

    • Five endgame bosses, new and returning.

    • Target-farming for uniques and the ultra-rare “uber uniques.”

    • Renown will fully carry over.

  • Tekken 8 will be releasing on January 26, 2024

…and a ton more beyond this. But you know what they say, “showing is better than telling.” So here’s your need-to-watch list. I hope you have a few hours to spare.
